Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Intern
 Spring – Fall, 2025

 Pay: $14.28 - $24.61
 Full-Time, Seasonal Internship (up to 6 months), Not Benefit Eligible

Essential Position Functions

General Duties (all areas):

  • Perform fieldwork to collect and verify GIS data using GPS and other tools.
  • Assist with creating and maintaining GIS datasets, maps, and reports.
  • Conduct data entry and ensure accuracy within City GIS workflows.
  • Operate field data collection equipment, including GPS receivers, mobile devices, and digital cameras.
  • Utilize ESRI/ArcGIS software for project tasks, including mapping and data analysis.
  • Perform tasks as directed to support GIS projects and workflows.
  • Collaborate with co-workers and interact with the public as needed.
  • Perform other duties as apparent or assigned.


 Utilities GIS:

  • Inspect and document stormwater infrastructure, water, and sewer utilities.
  • Prepare utility maps and maintain related GIS data.
  • Conduct routine maintenance assessments of utilities infrastructure.


 Stormwater/Water Quality GIS:

  • Conduct inspections of stormwater infrastructure and treatment practices.
  • Assess conditions and maintenance needs of gray and green stormwater systems.
  • Assist with public education and engagement activities related to stormwater management.
  • Support lake monitoring and other water resource activities, including physical and chemical monitoring.
  • Competently and safely operate:
    • Data collection equipment and mobile devices.
    • Various hand tools and outdoor power tools.
    • 4-wheel drive or light utility vehicles and non-motorized watercraft.
    • Personal computer, iPad, and peripheral equipment.


 Citywide GIS/IT:

  • Assist with various City GIS projects, including data creation, verification, and online mapping.
  • GIS data documentation and cataloging.
  • Support application development tasks, such as scripting (e.g., Python, Arcade) or configuring ArcGIS Online solutions.
  • Create maps and reports for internal and public use.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be currently enrolled in or have graduated in the previous 12 months from high school, trade school, college, or a university program emphasizing or related to GIS, civil engineering, water resources or environmental engineering, stormwater management, or landscape construction.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Familiarity or experience with ESRI/ArcGIS software and GIS concepts.
  • Familiarity or experience with Microsoft Office applications.
Things that may help you be successful in this role
  • Experience with Global Positioning Systems (GPS) equipment and data collection, ESRI/ArcGIS software and GIS concepts.
  • Coursework or experience in GIS, civil/environmental engineering, stormwater management, or a related field.
  • Experience working with municipal utilities or government GIS.
  • Familiarity with ArcGIS Online, ESRI Arcade, or related scripting/programming (e.g., Python, JavaScript).
  • Knowledge of sewer and water utility terminology.
  • Experience with public engagement or educational activities.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and the public.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to follow oral or written instructions.
  • Willingness to work in various weather conditions.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 70 pounds and perform strenuous tasks as needed.


WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Fieldwork: Up to 75% of time may be spent in the field, depending on placement.
  • Office Work: Remaining time will be in an office environment, using computers and GIS software.
  • Employees must be willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and uneven terrain.
  • Must have ability to lift, turn, move, carry, place, and retrieve documents, tools, or objects weighing up to 70 pounds from all levels such as a 7-foot high car top, storage shelf, or file cabinet.


SCHEDULE & HOURS

  • Full-time, seasonal, Monday through Friday; not to exceed 40 hours per week.
  • Typical hours are 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. or 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with occasional adjustments for specific projects or fieldwork.
