The City of Woodinville is offering an internship position in the Information Services Division starting June/July 2025. The Information Services Division is responsible for management of the Information Technology (IT) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) operations as well as its alignment with the City’s day-to-day business operations and initiatives.
The GIS Intern will have the opportunity to gain experience in each of these areas primarily through hands-on tasks, project-based activities, and occasional field work. The GIS Intern will provide a broad range of GIS technical support on projects with duties including geographic data compilation, standardization, and management; web mapping application development and maintenance; and cartographic product creation. This Intern will conduct related research to support modern GIS best practices.

Woodinville, Washington is a premier tourist destination with a population of about 14,000 though the city is growing. This growth is causing lots of exciting projects to work on. Located about 20 miles northeast of Seattle, Woodinville offers the benefits of a bustling urban area against the backdrop of the picturesque Sammamish River Valley. Woodinville is known for its tourism industries with over 100 wineries, breweries, and distilleries and many opportunities for outdoor activities.
It's a great place to work and we manage to do a lot with only about 50 employees, including planning, permitting, code enforcement, street/storm water maintenance, infrastructure construction and maintenance, parks, and general administrative services. GIS Data Management
- Collect, create, and handle geospatial data from various technologies. Ensure data accuracy and adherence to the organization’s standards. Create data reviewer quality control rules.
- Support in the transition from shapefile data format to an organized geodatabase schema.
- Write and maintain documentation on data and metadata standards.
ArcGIS Online Development
- Develop new and assist in managing web apps and maps that are needed amongst various City departments.
- Understand and help manage security levels of data through assigned groups and user roles.
- Publish and keep map services up to date. Research map services that are available by county, state or federal entities, to facilitate use by/for web applications.
- Support of City integration with asset management and permitting software.
ArcGIS Pro Cartography
- Work with SQL queries, MapPlex labeling, symbology settings, and various other ESRI tools for high quality cartographic representations.
- Produce maps of various sizes and file types for business stakeholders. Delivery of requested products and services through dynamic timelines.
- Translate and problem solve requests into a cohesive, easy to understand exhibit.
Education, Experience, and Training:
City of Woodinville GIS Intern must be enrolled in an accredited certificate, 2-year, 4-year, or graduate program during this internship. The GIS internship is open to students pursuing a degree in GIS, geography, computer science, environmental studies/science, planning, or a related field with an emphasis in GIS. Must be 18 years or older and legal to work in the United States. The GIS Intern should posses and maintain a valid driver’s license.
Knowledge of:
- MS OS including Windows 11 & Windows Server.
- MS Office 365 suite & MS Teams.
- ESRI software: ArcGIS Pro 3+, ArcGIS Online, Survey 123, and basic ability to work with ArcMap 10.8.2 and ArcCatalog 10.8.2.
- Work with vector and raster data within a geodatabase environment, including data creation, editing, and management.
- Understand and work with projections, and metadata.
- Proven ability to create cartographic map production.
- Familiarity with Arcade, HTML, Python, and SQL.
- Asset management software (i.e. Cartegraph) or permitting software (i.e. Accela).
- Apple iPhone and iPad devices.
Ability to:
- Learn city policies and procedures.
- Contribute excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Prepare written reports, technical documentation, and data standard documentation.
- Adapt communication styles for different audiences with varying knowledge of GIS practices.
- Provide high attention to detail when collecting and quality checking data.

- Manage multiple requests with limited direction.
- Use independent judgment in technical troubleshooting, creative problem solving, and resourcefulness.

JOB DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is primarily performed in an indoor setting, with occasional fieldwork. While performing the duties of this job, the incumbent must frequently sit and talk or hear; occasionally stand, walk, grip or feel with hands, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, and lift objects weighing up to 25 pounds. The nature of the work has frequent interruptions. Requires strong public communication skills. May occasionally be required to work beyond normal working hours, weekends, and holidays. The ability to operate a personal computer is required. This position may also require substantial phone use and the ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of audiences.Assigned duties are to be performed while adhering to the City’s operational policies, safety rules, and procedures.
