The Prince William County Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) is looking for a motivated and professional GIS Analyst with a passion for the outdoors and parks to manage our GIS data and facility/asset inventory. This is a career-defining opportunity to assist DPR with spatial analysis and mapping projects in support of the long-range development of the County’s parks and recreation facilities, as well as the on-going expansion of the County’s trails system. The Planning Team within DPR develops several long-range planning documents and master plans for individual parks, all of which are supported by GIS data and analyses. We are seeking a candidate with a diverse background in GIS, and experience or interest in planning and recreation to help carry out our long-range planning goals.

About This Role:
The Planning and Capital Projects Division is responsible for the planning, design, and construction of all capital projects across Prince William County’s public park system, which encompasses 5,200 acres across 90+ parks, including 2 waterparks, 4 community pools, 2 indoor aquatic and fitness centers, 2 community centers, 4 golf courses, 60+ miles of trails, 15 historic sites, and nearly 200 athletic fields. The Division is one of 8 within the Department of Parks and Recreation and consists of 12 full-time staff, including Project Managers, Landscape Architects, and Planners. This position will report to the Planning Manager and tasks will primarily be in support of the Division’s planning efforts. Because of our small team size and demanding workload, the GIS Analyst needs to be self-motivated and able to work with minimal supervision with the initiative and skills to produce map products of high quality. This position will provide GIS expertise to non-GIS trained staff and anticipate opportunities and obstacles to provide effective spatial analysis support and map products. As the only GIS Analyst within the Department, the successful candidate will also be responsible for data collection, database management, and GIS mapping and analyses for other Department divisions and is the primary liaison to County GIS staff for countywide projects, including the development and maintenance of all parks related data in the County’s SDE. This position is responsible for developing quality map products in a timely manner, making presentations to senior staff and elected officials, and coordinating data and data analysis with County GIS and other County GIS staff. Maps and analysis produced by the GIS Analyst are used in high-visibility locations such as long-range plans, park signs, print media, online media, and presentations.
Minimum Requirements:
High School diploma or G.E.D. and a minimum of 5 years of professional GIS experience.
Preferences:
- Bachelor’s degree in GIS/Cartography/Spatial Analysis, or related field
- Proficiency in ESRI mapping products including ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and ESRI Field Maps
- Experience with field data collection
- Strong data development and management skills
- Ability to adapt to changing deadlines and manage multiple work tasks at the same time
- Interest in advocating for Parks and Recreation as well as resource conservation
- Willingness to collaborate in a team setting
- Experience working for an accredited Parks agency
- Experience in local government
- Ability to take initiative and expand DPR’s GIS capacity
Work Schedule:
Work location is a typical office environment, with individual offices and flex space available, including telework opportunities. Outdoor/field work will intermittently be required for data collection; evening hours for public meetings/presentations may also be required periodically. This is a full-time position (37.5 hours per week) with standard work hours between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
Starting Salary Range:
$77,701.72 - $94,700.00
