Under direct supervision, the purpose of the internship is to receive on-the-job exposure and experience to learn how to perform a variety of duties for a specified department, job family, and field of studies. Students assigned to this classification may perform both routine duties and non-routine support duties as the nature of the area of work and studies assigned. Emphasis is placed on providing varied, meaningful learning experiences to the student, while at the same time providing work assistance to the City. Assignment will provide entry level Geographic Information Systems and information technology (IT) work by performing in the field and office in connection with maintenance and contribution of City IT projects. This job has no supervisory responsibilities.
Upon completion of the internship, the Director of Information Technology Services will provide the intern with a letter of acknowledgement that can be provided to prospective employers or to satisfy educational institution requirements.
Responsibilities and Reporting During an Emergency Situation:
Essential Employees may be required to work during a declared emergency. Depending on the nature of the emergency, this may require working around the clock for several days on short notice.
Non Essential Employees will not be required to work during a declared emergency. The employee’s Department Head will determine when the employee will be required to work.
Duties/Responsibilities- Assists City GIS staff with creating data, maps, websites.
- May assist in field data collection and surveys.
- Creates spreadsheets.
- Develops and generates reports.
- Participates in IT team meetings, as directed.
- May assist with designing, coding and implementing basic applications and web pages.
- Assists IT staff with various projects and tasks.
- Performs basic administrative duties including written reports, memorandums, letters and electronic correspondence, interaction with the public and communication through telephone and meetings.
- This position requires regular and reliable attendance and the employee’s physical presence at the workplace; however, the department is willing to work around the applicants course work and hours.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of current office systems technology and associated support systems.
- Skill in the use of standard office computer equipment and software applications.
- Strong teamwork and customer service skills.

- Must be actively enrolled and attending an accredited college/university, or have completed a degree program from an accredited college/university and obtained a degree in IT, GIS, Engineering or related field.
- Completed or enrolled in Introductory courses in Geographic Information Systems Technology field of study.

Work performed is primarily:

WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Contact with internal and external customers, and outside agencies.
- May be required to work hours other than the regular schedule including evening, weekend, holidays and during emergencies.
