Job Description

Summer 2025 Location and Environment Bureau – GIS Intern 

The Location and Environment Bureau GIS Intern will work directly with DOT staff to update and develop GIS data, maps, and tools for use in bureau planning studies. This position offers a collaborative work environment with the opportunity to work on project teams and contribute to project deliverables. Some in-state travel may be required.

Location and Environment Bureau GIS Intern duties (beginning Summer 2025 – up to 40 hours/week):   

  • Use ArcGIS Online and ArcPro to display and analyze data.  
  • Develop interactive web maps and applications to display planning studies data and recommendations.
  • Develop and maintain data for existing and previously published studies.
  • Visualize and prepare data to be used in planning studies.
  • Technical writing and preparing graphics
  • Preparing GIS training tutorials
  • Working with the GIS team to document and maintain records
  • Other technology and support activities as assigned by supervisor

Preferred background:  

  • Good communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently as well as on a team
  • Enrollment in a GIS program of study or a related program
  • Interest in working with ArcGIS, ArcPro and Microsoft Office
  • Interest in learning about transportation project planning and development.

Duration of Internship:  Summer 2025, from May 15-August 18, with potential for extension into the academic school year if student remains eligible and course of study remains relevant to the work.  

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Currently enrolled students in a degree program at an accredited educational institution.
