The City of Brainerd is currently accepting applications for a GIS internship. Ideal candidates are those majoring in geography or GIS, computer science, environmental science, or a related program – graduates are also welcome. Primary duties are to collect field data, update our infrastructure data and maps, assist with GIS application development, and other miscellaneous GIS projects.

Essential FunctionsEXAMPLES OF WORK:
- Data collection in the field using GPS equipment and digitizing from aerial photos
- GIS data maintenance including utilities, parcels, streets, land use, water resources, etc
- Work with existing city databases and assist with developing new applications
- Respond to requests for maps or datasets and help support GIS end users
- Scan and index records into document imaging system, sewer video management, etc
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Candidates must be familiar with ESRI GIS software, including editing data
- A valid driver’s license is required
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office products – including Access
- Understanding of public land survey, land subdivision, plats, legal descriptions, etc
- Understanding of utility infrastructure and able to interpret construction plans
- Online GIS application development experience highly desirable
- Preference may be given to those who qualify for the Sourcewell Internship Program
- Satisfactory completion of FBI/MN BCA background examination including national fingerprint-based criminal history record check and maintain Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) Security and Privacy: Security Role.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT*: Salary is $20 per hour DOQ. This is an internship (temporary) position with flexible dates. Work hours are generally 8 am to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday, up to 40 hours per week (no overtime). Position is not eligible for remote work.
*Pursuant to MN Statute, seasonal assignments are limited to 67 working days per calendar year or 100 working days per calendar year if the employees are under the age of 22, are full-time students enrolled in a nonprofit or public educational institution prior to being hired by the employer, and have indicated, either in an application for employment or by being enrolled at an educational institution for the next academic year or term, an intention to continue as students during or after their temporary employment.
