The Geographic Information System (GIS) Intern will work under the general supervision of the Information Technology Manager. The GIS Intern will perform a variety of administrative and technical support duties to assist the GIS staff.
This position is a full-time temporary position. The hours will be Monday-Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm for a two-month period starting in June 2025.
The following duties are illustrative only and are not intended to be all inclusive:
- Learns and explores all aspects of the GIS Division including field data collection, updating spatial databases, reading and interpreting site and subdivision plans or documents, and updating attribute information.
- Assists with collection and development of Enterprise Geographic Information System (GIS), including asset inventories and land records.
- Works with Parks and Public Works staff to create maps and data for City departments, and special projects.
- Use a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver to collect utility, park facility, address, and other infrastructure data.
- Collect and enter raw data into the GIS for City infrastructure using various methods. Manage data and related data structures within various data constructs including Enterprise Geodatabases, Excel, CSV, DWG, etc.
- Creates and maintains metadata for GIS layers and documents GIS procedures.
- Assists with the creation of applications using ArcGIS Online/Enterprise technology.
- Create and modify models and/or scripts to automate GIS-related workflows.
- Follow QA/QC procedures to verify and update existing data.
- Use AutoCAD to view engineering drawings to get detailed information to use for GIS data entry.
- Analyze legal descriptions for right-of-way, easements and other surveyed property and map them utilizing the Public Land Survey System COGO (coordinate geometry).
KNOWLEDGE: Fundamental understanding of GIS Concepts including Geographic Coordinate Systems, Map Projections, Geoids, Horizontal and Vertical Datums, Spatial Resolution, and Georeferencing. Knowledge of ESRI's suite of ArcGIS products (ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Field Maps, etc.), GIS editing tools, web-based GIS implementation, and mapping or survey grade GPS data collection and processing. Basic knowledge of Python, JavaScript or other relevant scripting languages is desired.
SKILL: Apply the knowledge required to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position; utilize effective interpersonal, verbal, and written skills. Demonstrate skills in maintaining secure data center and server capabilities in collaboration with a small technical team.
ABILITY: Work as a team member and on an individual basis; develop trust and cooperation; develop and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors and co-workers; act with tact, good judgment, and discretion; maintain the confidentiality of matters, as appropriate; communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; acquire knowledge of new trends and technology and apply modern practices. Must have ability to read, understand and interpret English language manuals and other written materials; perform physically demanding work.
TRAINING: Recent graduate of, or current student in, a college program with an emphasis in Geographic Information Systems and Technology, Geography, Environmental Science, Computer Science, or related program.
EXPERIENCE: Any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides evidence that the applicant possesses the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position.
Must possess a valid Colorado driver's license with a safe driving record.
