GIS Intern

Under direct supervision, create, edit and maintain geospatial datasets, digitize Geographic Information Systems (GIS) data from digital plans, create and update City maps, support citywide GIS services; support application design and development, and integration for both the centralized enterprise GIS and the geospatial components of third party applications; support and use Windows, Internet, and Mobile-based mapping and data applications; assists departments with operations and maintenance of geographical and data systems for all aspects of the GIS product lifecycle.
- Perform field data collection
- Digitize features from paper and electronic plans
- Create and maintain geospatial data queries resulting in maps, reports and/or graphs/charts
- Participate in projects as a member of the IT team
- Collect aerial imagery and analysis through the use of drones
- Performs other related duties, as assigned.
Knowledge of:
- Modern 2D/3D GIS tools and concepts, data, and applications.
- Cartography and remote sensing methodologies.
- GPS data collection tools
- GIS data management principles.
- Business productivity products (MS Office, SharePoint, etc).
- Relational Databases (SQL, PostgreSQL, etc).
- FAA Part 107, Drone Pilot
- Project management methodologies
- Effective customer service techniques.
Ability to:
- Develop maps and/or applications using modern programming tools.
- Assist in the development GIS web data services.
- Synthesize stated requirements, questions, problems, and translate into work products.
- Analyze technical problems and recommend, design, and/or implement appropriate solutions.
- Work independently and complete assignments in an accurate and timely manner.
- Conduct research and analysis yielding sound GIS principles and best practices.
- Create technical documents, user guides, and help documents.
- Maintain knowledge of modern GIS principles and technologies.
- Communicate effectively with the public and with City employees, both orally and in writing.
- Provide effective customer service.
- Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships.
Skill in:
- Geospatial data analysis, transformations, and maintenance.
- Developing and/or deploying mapping services.
- Cartography and Color Theory.

- Ability to maintain precise and organized records
- Modern GIS-centric scripting languages (Python, SQL, etc.)

Minimum Qualifications
Completion of upper division classes in a college or university degree program in GIS, Geography, Computer Science or related field. Hands on experience with ESRI's ArcGIS applications in an enterprise environment.
Desired Qualifications: Paid experience with ArcMap 10.x, ArcGIS Pro, CAD files, Python, Visual Basic and ArcGIS Geodatabase maintenance. Recent ESRI technical certifications. FAA Part 107 Certification.
Physical Requirements
Work is performed in an office environment utilizing standard office equipment and technology and may require sitting for prolonged periods using a computer. The incumbent stands, walks, and may twist, reach, bend, crouch and kneel. An incumbent must be able to meet the requirements of the classification and have mobility, vision, hearing and dexterity levels appropriate to the duties to be performed. This position has exposure to vibrations from a computer and other office equipment.
Essential functions may require moderate physical effort, typically involving climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, lifting and moving of objects and materials of moderate to heavy weight (25-100 lbs.), and standing for extended periods.
Exempt/Non-Exempt
This is a non-exempt position. Overtime at the rate of one and one half times the hourly rate of the classification is paid for hours in excess of 40 hours per week.
Background Check/Physical Exam
Individuals selected for employment will be required to take and pass a background check (fingerprinting) for all positions and medical exam for full time and permanent part time positions. The background check and medical examination are at City expense; and conducted by a law enforcement agency and physician designated by the City. Candidates who are currently working are urged not to resign until they have successfully passed the background check, physical examination and received a final offer letter.
