The City is seeking an energetic and skilled intern to assist the City’s GIS Division of the Transportation and Engineering Department with multiple data collection and mapping projects. The intern will learn about the functions and services of a local government and gain experience in the role of GIS in a public agency, particularly as related to a typical Public Works Department.
This position is estimated at 20 hours per week during the school year and/or the summer and is a part-time, intern position.
In addition to the responsibilities listed below, the intern may attend meetings and be assigned trainings to understand more about the role.
- Collecting location and other information about assets in the field using a mapping-grade Trimble GPS unit. Examples of assets the intern may be tasked with mapping include fiber infrastructure, water meters, sewer cleanouts, catch basins, and street signs.
Entering attribute information for existing mapped features through Esri’s Field Maps app or in the office by researching old plans, building files, and other source materials.

Based on the selected candidate’s skills and interests, there are a wide variety of other projects the intern may be tasked with assisting on in order to gain experience and knowledge. These projects may include:- collecting inventory data on existing ditch, swale, and culvert structures
- collecting information on existing sidewalks and sidewalk ramps, including width, cross slope and running slope
- creating applications in Portal for ArcGIS for internal users
- performing basic analysis and creating maps for other City departments
- writing python scripts to automate processes
Prerequisite Skills:
- Excellent computer skills with the ability to learn quickly.
- Ability to communicate and work as part of a team.
- Flexibility and the ability to work independently.
- Resourceful and self-directed. Willingness to ask for assistance or clarification and to follow instructions.
- Enthusiasm and interest in working for local government with a demonstrated commitment to service.
- Some experience with Esri GIS software with the ability and desire to learn.
- A valid driver’s license is required.
Optional Skills:
Knowledge or experience of the functions and services of local government are desired but not essential.
Experience with Trimble GPS equipment is desired but not essential.
The ideal candidate will have completed college level coursework in GIS, geography, or a related program. Computer skills including word processing and the ability to quickly learn new software are required. Preference will be given to students at the Junior year of college or above, or students seeking work experience in a related field that can demonstrate the level of skill required for the position.
