The Opportunity:
The Utilities and Engineering Department at the University of Central Florida (UCF) is seeking to hire a GIS Specialist II with knowledge of Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR). This position is responsible for locating and marking underground utilities, responding to utility locate requests via the Sunshine 811 system, and ensuring compliance with Florida Statutes. The role also involves assisting with verification, inventory, and documentation of all field utility infrastructure within the GIS system. The GIS Specialist II may utilize soft-dig methods for investigation work and will maintain a variety of GIS data, including geodatabases and feature attributes.
Responsibilities:

Respond to utility locate requests received via the Sunshine 811 system for UCF’s infrastructure, including water, wastewater, chilled water, natural gas, reclaimed water, secondary electric, and other utilities as requested, ensuring compliance with Florida State Statutes.

Operate and maintain GPR and other locate equipment as needed. Responsible for purchasing necessary supplies for locates through WorkDay.

Maintain accurate digital files for documenting locate tickets, work areas, field findings, photos, and other relevant information.

Conduct archival research and perform secondary utility locates for field verification. Digitize the data collected into the GIS system.

Maintain GIS data layers, ensuring accurate and up-to-date mapping of utility infrastructure and related features.
Minimum Qualifications:
High School Diploma or Equivalent and 2+ years of relevant experience. Or an equivalent combination of education and experience pursuant to Fla. Stat. 112.219. Click here for more information
Preferred Qualifications:

2+ years of relevant experience in GIS, utility management, or a related field.

Experience with GPR and other utility locate equipment.

Ability to work in extreme environments and collaborate with individuals from varied backgrounds and experiences.

Familiarity with the 811 system and state statutes related to utility locating.

Proficiency in GIS software (ArcGIS, QGIS, or similar), including data management, geodatabases, and feature attributes.

Knowledge of utility infrastructure types, including water, wastewater, chilled water, natural gas, reclaimed water, and secondary electric.

Experience with soft-dig methods for utility investigation.

Strong organizational skills with the ability to document and manage detailed field notes, photos, and other documentation.

Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks efficiently.

Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, for effective documentation and collaboration.
Health Assessment Required:
UCF policy requires completion and passing of a physical exam for this position.
Special Instructions to the Applicants:
This position requires the completion of a Level II background check.
Position requires a valid Class E driver’s license. The position may involve driving to various locations on and off campus to conduct University business.
May be required to participate in respiratory, medical examination, and training in use of respirators.
