Summary
The role of the GIS Technician includes supporting technologists, or related professionals in building, maintaining, modifying, or using geographic information systems (GIS) databases. GIS Technician performs custom application development and provides user support to satisfy clients needs.
- Work on ongoing environmental, transportation, utility, and other technical projects.
- Have the opportunity to work in project planning and execution
- Interact extensively with scientists, engineers, corporate and government clients and will help develop standard deliverable formats for various contracts based on client and internal specifications and industry best practices.
- Perform regular data entry, data analysis and database management.
- Provide technical help when it is needed.
Essential Functions
- Analyze Geographic Information Systems (GIS) data to identify spatial relationships or display results of analyses, using maps, graphs, or tabular data
- Maintain or modify existing Geographic Information Systems (GIS) databases
- Enter data into Geographic Information Systems (GIS) databases, using techniques such as coordinate geometry, keyboard entry of tabular data, manual digitizing of maps, scanning or automatic conversion to vectors, or conversion of other sources of digital data
- Review existing or incoming data for accuracy, usefulness, quality, or completeness of documentation
- Create maps and exhibits
Desired Qualifications
- Either a combination of 0-2 years of education in Engineering, Geography, or other related fields and GIS experience preferred.
- Proficiency in using ESRI ArcGIS products and familiarity with ArcGIS-based modeling.
- Proficiency in computer technology, database management, and Microsoft Office programs. Microsoft Access knowledge is a plus.
- Database management experience
- 0-3 years of professional experience
- Use excellent verbal and written communication skills to update team with progress reports and updates.
- Must be able to multi-task and prioritize tasks
- Ability to work independently and as a team in a fast paced, challenging environment
