GIS Technician

JOB SUMMARY

The GIS Technician provides assistance with enterprise level GIS maintenance, map production, GIS application/interface configuration and development, user training/troubleshooting and other duties as assigned supporting the asset management and data information systems functions of the Public Works Division.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Inspection and field collection of the location and attributes of the assets maintained by the Public Works Division.
• GIS integration of spatial and tabular data related to Public Works assets, maintained as hardcopy maps and files, spreadsheets, databases, CAD files, field data and GIS data from multiple county departments and other government units. Update existing data sets to keep data current and maintain data integrity.
• Create maps for presentation and publication using appropriate thematic mapping techniques to clearly, accurately and concisely present spatial, statistical and attribute data.
• Assist with the configuration of commercial GIS related software and development of customized GIS applications and interfaces to allow end users to interact with, analyze and modify GIS data sets.
• Provide assistance, training, advice and guidance to engineers, technicians and related staff in advanced and complex geographic information system principles, procedures and practices, accepted industry standards and best management practices.
• The employee is responsible for maintaining a safe environment for self and others and is accountable for such as described in the Carver County Personnel Policy. Regular attendance is essential to the maintenance of a smooth and consistent work flow of the employee's responsibilities and the functions of the department as a whole.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Associates Degree in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) or closely-related field (Examples include Management Information Systems (MIS), Computer Science, Land Surveying)
and
• Valid Class D Driver's License or evidence of mobility.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Bachelor's Degree in Geographic Information Systems (GIS)  Management Information Systems (MIS), Computer Science, Land Surveying or related field
• One year of GIS work experience

SCORED EXAMINATION PROCESS

All applications will be screened for minimum qualifications, scored and ranked. The highest ranked candidates meeting minimum qualifications will be recommended for the scored oral examinations (interviews). Final selection for the position will include successful completion of oral interview(s), reference checks and background check.
