Job Summary:

  • Candidate will enter spatial data using established workflows and methods through the use of coordinate geometry and other heads-up digitizing methods.  Candidate will also produce standard maps using GIS software, convert GIS data to AutoCAD format for Engineering department, use coordinate geometry to convert surveying data to GIS format, use GPS handheld units to compile data on public works facilities in the field, review GIS data for accuracy by applying standard specifications, research property ownership and document its history, add annotations to spatial data after confirming identity of each feature, and use GIS technology to create maps in support of planning projects and development permit applications.   

Accountability and Duties:

  • Ability to utilize GIS technology to record spatial data
  • Produces standard and custom maps using GIS software
  • Compile spatial data using field methods
  • Convert spatial data from native forms to other formats
  • Review contractor-supplied spatial data for conformance to specifications
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Provides an accurate accounting of time spent on projects with descriptions for each time entry on a weekly basis

Education and/or Experience:

  • Associate’s degree in geomatics, engineering technology, or GIS; or equivalent academic credentials related to the field and one year of experience in the use of GIS technology

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

  • Valid driver’s license

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Excellent oral and technical written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Available to work nights and weekends to complete a project as necessary
  • Ability to make independent decisions within a general framework
  • Knowledge of the principles of geographic information science and GIS technology
  • Knowledge of industry related software and proficiency in GIS based software such as ArcGIS or QGIS as well as Microsoft Office
  • Knowledge of the fundamentals of GPS receivers and skill in their use for data collection
  • Understanding of property ownership documents and the ability to translate them into spatial data
  • Must be fluent in the English language

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience using CAD software such as Civil 3D and MicroStation
  • Familiarity with cloud servers and web-hosting applications for geospatial data

The employee may frequently lift or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions, possibly for extended assignments.
