The City of Raleigh Information Technology Department is seeking a curious, innovative, and motivated individual to join our GIS and Emerging Technology team as a GIS Intern. This entry level position offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience with cutting-edge GIS tools, 3D modeling, and data analysis while contributing to real City projects. Our team works on exciting initiatives that combine technology, data visualization, and problem-solving to improve City services and planning efforts. This role is ideal for someone who thrives on learning, enjoys exploring new technologies, and wants to build valuable GIS skills while collaborating with industry experts.
This internship opportunity is a paid position available to work approximately between May through August 2024. Position pay rates are dependent upon education and experience and range from $18 per hour for Undergraduate students and up to $20 per hour for Graduate students.

Duties and Responsibilities- Assist in developing and maintaining GIS databases, maps, and spatial data to support City projects
- Conduct data collection, entry, and validation to ensure accuracy and completeness
- Collaborate with GIS professionals to analyze spatial data and generate meaningful insights for City initiatives
- Contribute to exciting projects like 3D model development, spatial analysis and data visualization
- Support mapping efforts using GIS software such as ArcGIS Pro and emerging tools
- Assist in the preparation and presentation of GIS reports dashboards, and visual insights for City departments
- Work with a variety of datasets, including environmental data, infrastructure maps and community planning resources
- Pursuing or recently completed a degree in Geography, GIS, Environmental Science, Urban Planning, or a related field.
- Foundational understanding of GIS principles, spatial analysis, and data visualization techniques.
- Experience with GIS software such as ArcGIS Pro is preferred; exposure to 3D modeling tools or data analysis platforms is a plus.
- Strong problem-solving skills and a desire to explore innovative solutions.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment.
- Curiosity, creativity, and an eagerness to learn about emerging GIS technologies and applications.
