LIDAR/ GIS Specialist

What You’ll Be Doing

VPS is currently seeking a LIDAR / GIS Specialist. As a LIDAR / GIS Specialist, you will work with VPS LIDAR systems to post process raw LIDAR data, conduct quality control efforts, and create accurate and detailed point cloud data in support of VPS utility engineering projects. The LIDAR / GIS specialist will also work to classify the LIDAR point cloud data into specific classifications for individual projects and extract the information into various 3rd party modeling software. This position will work as a bridge between onsite boots-on-the-ground data collection staff, GIS drafting staff, and engineers, helping bring projects from concept to fruition under the guidance and direction of a licensed Professional Engineer (PE).

The ideal candidate is willing to learn our business processes, terminology, policies, and regulations, as well as the system requirements for post-processing of LiDAR point cloud data. Your expertise will be vital in classifying and filtering point clouds to utility structures, vegetation, and aerial conductor features, and subsequently extracting mapping features to create precise 2D and 3D models. LIDAR / GIS Specialists can expect to communicate frequently with clients and staff and work on multiple projects simultaneously. You will work extensively with ESRI and CAD software (ArcGIS or AutoCAD), as well as specialized LiDAR processing software (Trimble Business Center).

The ideal candidate is organized, eager to learn, professional, and adaptable. Attention to detail and strong interpersonal communication skills are vital. The nature of the role requires a team player – meaning someone who can take ownership of assigned tasks, collaborate well with other members of the team, and proactively seeks to help team members push a project to the finish line. This position does not have supervisory responsibility.

Qualifications:

• Strong organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills

• Experience with ESRI ArcGIS and AutoCAD

• Experience processing LIDAR data with Trimble Business Center

• Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite

• Ability to digitize and edit floor plans accurately and efficiently

• Proficient in managing files, drawings, and maps for report output in various formats

• Experience in creating and adhering to quality control procedures and maintaining documented standard operating procedures

• Ability to collaborate with team members to ensure data accuracy and project completion

• The candidate must have strong command of the English language with good written and oral communication skills to work effectively with internal team members and external client personnel.

• Must be able to successfully pass clients’ background screening process.

• The ability to pass a background check/drug test/driving record check.

• Authorized to work in the United States.

Required Education & Experience

• Associates degree with a GIS focus.

• Minimum of 3 years of experience working with processing LIDAR point clouds 

• Experience working on multidisciplinary project teams

• Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record

Desired Education & Experience

• Experience working with public utilities and utility infrastructure

• Ability to manage cross-divisional communication

• Strong technical writing skills

• Familiarity with surveys, civil drawings and construction plans
